Rotary Club of Patong Beach finns i Phuket, Thailand.

Dear Sam,
As your Presidential term draws to a close, and a year that no doubt started with the high hopes of any young Rotary Club. To make this year a year of lasting impression on your community, and being recognized for your special qualities. Little did we all know that it turned into a test of the truth behind those words.

The ordeals you, and the Rotary Club of Patong Beach have had to face since 26 December have more than exceeded what any Rotary Club is expected to grasp, munster and handle. Yet the Rotarians of Patong Beach stood up to the test, and have proceeded in my eyes, to continue to be a living example of our organizations motto Service above Self.

Not only this, but this frightful Act of Nature has also brought people closer, and it is impossible to say how long it might have taken for our Clubs to meet, if we had only to rely on our traditional ways. Possibly next year at the upcoming Rotary Convention in Copenhagen/Malmö?

I would at least like to, on behalf of my fellow Club members of the Rotary Club of Stockholm Strand, wish to thank you, President Sam, your Officers and every single Member of your Club for setting an example for all of us. Your work continues. And under your new President Arnaud our support for your work will continue as long as is necessary.Of the 21 M Thai Baht, approx 10 percent were contributed by Swedish Rotarians, families of Swedish victims and friends, with the desire and wish their contributions be a part of rebuilding efforts and building a future for your community. I have received numerous emails and phone calls from contributors eager to know more about the results of your work. It's difficult to say why, but I have felt, from that very first moment that the funds we collected were being put to the very best of uses, and I believe I have been able to convey this reassurance to others. When I read your reports, and see the pictures, I know in my heart you have done more than any person can expect of you. All this was built on trust and trust alone. Isn't that a remarkable word? And through Rotary it still proves to have a unique magic.
Thank you for all you have done until now.
Thank you for all the work still to be done.

Thank you for the opportunity for us to help you.
And above all, thank you for being where you were, and doing what you did, for all those people whose lives would be so different after that morning on 26 December 2005.
I look forward to the day when I can shake your hand and thank you in person.

Yours very much in Rotary

Dear Tord,
Many thanks for the message. I have sent it to all the Board members of Rotary Club "Moscow International". Considering the huge support that this area receives worldwide, we think that our support can be mainly moral. In any case we would like to contribute to your generous effort. We are planning an event in February and we will devote part of the benefit for help to people suffering after this wave of destruction. I don't know how much money we
will collect but in any case, further to this money, our Club shall send a minimum amount of $1,000 to Stockolm Strand RC .

Yours very friendly in Rotary

Lägesrapport från Phuket sammanställd av David Arell - klubbsekreterare i Rotary Club of Patong Beach: [OBS! Detaljerade lägesrapporter publiceras här]

Dear Tord,
Thank you for your email and I am happy to provide you here with this update of our projects.

Rotary Club of Patong Beach Tsunami Relief Efforts
Short Term Relief
The Club has allocated 250,000 Baht for immediate relief needs including food, water, shelter and clothing for survivors. More funds will be allocated to this as needed.

Mid & Long Term Relief
The club has identified 4 main projects which we will support in the mid and long term:

- Scholarships for childrenThis effort is to insure children have the money to complete high school (12th grade or Matayom Hok). Scholarships will be administered through the school counselors and
teachers, funds will not be disbursed to children or families directly. The funds will be used toward the purchase of school uniforms, shoes, books, pens pencils and lunch money. Annual meetings will
be held with schools to review status and audit receipts for each student. The funding will be 6,000 baht per year per student for years 1-6 and 8,000 baht per year per student for years 7-12.
Applications from the first group of 20 children are being reviewed now.

- Support for families to recover – task force lead by Frank
The initial donations will be used for support of 6,000 baht per month for up to 8 months to families in need of basic funds for food and shelter. The second stage is financial support for the
reestablishment of small business – the support to purchase the tools needed to get the family livelihood back. Applications from the first group of 13 families are being reviewed now.

- Water purification systems for schools, daycare and orphanages – task force lead by Brad

– Survey the need for clean water systems and implement required systems.
Permanent location for the Patong Beach Childcare Center – task force leader Paul. This task force is working to secure a permanent location for this day-care facility for the children of the slum
communities.

Additional projects under consideration by the board include adoption of a specific village to build homes and help the families, and work with a specific public school. However, the task force leaders of these additional projects must be identified and then funds secured before any commitments are made.

We will continue to update our website www.rotarypatong.org with progress on the relief.

Best regards,
David Arell - Secretary Rotary Club of Patong Beach

Dear Rtn. Tord,
It was a pleasure to welcome your Past President Nina and representative of a Swedish Club at our Weekly Meeting last Tuesday the 4th of Jan. 05.

I am sending you herewith pictures [SE HÄR BREVID ->] from the meeting and we all want to thank you for your support.

I also had attended a meeting of all 6 Rotary Club Presidents and 2 ADG and PDG of Phuket and we decided to open a separate account for the Province which will be used for long term relief, short term relief and middle term relief of which we hope that we can together with other Clubs and RI finance the re-building of a 100 homes (each Baht 100,000 without interior / 100 years Rotary = 100 Homes) for which we do have another meeting with the Vice Governor of Phuket tomorrow, or to re-build a school and give scholarship, build a library, give post trauma counseling, organize Vocational Training, install Water treatment system for village and schools. Attached please find a proposal from that meeting for all of our Clubs approval.

Lördag den 1 januari 2005:
Dear fellow Rotarians and donors,

We started an e-mail list where we will give you regular information about the projects and work our club is doing currently every day and ongoing efforts for Phuket and Phang Nga province relief efforts.

District 33330 Convoy
Yesterday the 31st of December 2004 the district of 3330 by its DG Voravut a Convoy of 5 trucks (from total 15 trucks) arrived on Phuket with relief material, and had been officially handed over to the Vice Governor of Phuket with a cheque of Baht 100,000. From there the material had been send to the Municipal office for re-packing and one truck load had been send to the short term storage of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach at the offices of ESP, our own Community Service Chair Persons offices on Bypass rd.

Rotary Club of Samui Relief Materials:
We also received a pick up truck from Koh Samui Rotary Club full of needed items, whereas the truck then had been loaded with drinking water and send to Khao Lak where water is needed most. The driver who came from Samui agreed to go up to Khao Lak to distribute the water directly there and give a helping hand where needed. THANK YOU to the Rotary Club of Samui.

Toothbrush Project
We started a Toothbrush Project as we knew from local hospitals that the patients in the hospital are in need of Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and other personal items. By calling upon our member Rtn. Wolfgang the GM from the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket, which had been partly damages and currently is closed for renovation and he agreed to supply us with as much materials we need. Our International Services Committee Chairperson Rtn. Michael went to pick it up and distribute to the Hospitals with help from his staff and my wife and also by Rtn. Andreas and the staff of his office. The donations had been distributed directly into the rooms of the patients which is the biggest problem the hospitals facing right now, though receiving lots of donations they don’t have the staff for distributions. Patients are very happy to receive these goods and also a little piece of chocolate which my wife took with her to hand out.

Medical Material distribution
Rtn. Andreas and his staff (though having lost their offices in Kamala Beach) also distributed items received by the Samui Rotary Club to the Patong Hospital, which had been most needed over there and helped the Toothbrush Project.

Casket Project
Our Community Chairperson Bradley who unfortunately had to leave Phuket last night as his mother in the States is in the hospital organized a Coffin production facility in front of his offices together with ANT Construction and sponsorship of the owner of Ant Constructions Mr. Andy’s father bought all wood available to produce coffins to send to Khao Lak, where they are most needed. Every day one or more trucks full of caskets are leaving his offices to be delivered to Khao Lak by local owners of trucks.
By today the last 15 caskets had been made and production had been stopped as the information from Khao Lak coming in, is that there are right now no more caskets needed.

“Operation Cookie”
Organized by the owner and fellow Rtn. Woody, the idea was to distribute cookies to the hospitals but it’s pretty obvious that the appropriate time has come and gone.
At the Patong Hospital they’ve put away most of the emergency tents. Only a few people are hanging out. Most of the donated goods were being taken away by military personnel – most likely to be sent to
Phang Nga or other places that really need it.
Anyway, we’re shelving the plans for “Operation Cookie” – and hoping that we’ll find a different way to kick off Rotary Interact soon.
A Relief Day at the Bakery is organized for this Sunday and the Operation Cookies will be moved to other hospitals on Phuket or Phang Nga.

Further did Rtn. Woody open his Bakery for the whole Sunday to give away free food.

Midnight Candle Light Memorial
Yesterday the Central Department store on Phuket organized a Candle Light memorial at the Central Phuket, which had official participation by the Thai Government and local Administration as the Interior Minister and Governor of Phuket, Vice Governors and many other dignitaries as well our Clubs representative. All New Years celebrations had been cancelled and Candle Light Memorials took place all over the island in memory of the disaster and the death tool it is taking.

Khao Lak Relief:
Today the first truck of cooking items had been send to Khao Lak by volunteers and Rtn. Michael and on Sunday the next will depart with Rtn. Larry and his team of volunteers.

Currently we are on a day to day working base and are happy to have our PP Jeroen back in Phuket, who will deliver tomorrow clothes and water to Khao Lak in Phang Nga province. Every member is helping along in their neighborhood or delivers relief materials to Khao Lak, help cleaning Patong Beach or the local community they live in.

Please find pictures on our home page, which will be updated every day. www.rotarypatong.org clicks on Tsunami logo.

ITEMS requested by the local Government:
Cooking materials, equipment for kitchen as the Government through the Navy are already building shelter for the homeless and need help on this side.

Yours in Rotary
